The Travels of Vince, Devin & Grant

Last week we took Grant on his first trip. Jonalyn had some business in New York, and Grant's not ready for day care yet, so we decided we'd all go. How hard could it be?

We survived the plane flight out there without too much difficulty, and made it to our hotel just fine, where we had a suite, so we could put Devin down early in the pull-out bed.

The next two days Devin, Grant & I kept up a busy social schedule in the city, meeting up with a lot of people we haven't seen since our trip to NYC last year. It was great to see all them, and even better to have some help with the boys! We survived the days without much fuss, but the real fun came at night when I tried (and failed) to get either to sleep back in the hotel room at bedtime. It turns out that's impossible with one parent. Thus, the kids stayed on west coast time.

Now, since we're already all the way out there, we've got to get a visit to the cousins in! We opted for Amtrak to Boston, which turned out to be a great move. It took 15 minutes from our hotel room to the train platform, we had twice the space as on a plane, cell phone and Internet the whole way, almost the same door-to-door time as flying, and much cheaper (we took the slow train 30min longer than the Acela, less than half the price). I loved it, and can't wait for an LA-SF train out here to duplicate that experience.

We met up with all the cousins in Seabrook, packing the house with 5 kids! The boys all slept in the newly configured "dorm" room with 2 bunk beds. They did great together. We ran them wild every day at the beach to tire them out, so we could relax a little during nap time.

Finally, to complicate things on the way home, Jonalyn had to reschedule to a day earlier for some meetings, taking Grant and leaving Devin & I for a day. We both found out that flying with one kid back was easier than two kids. Maybe we should split up again for our next flight.

So, in summary, traveling with two kids is exhausting. I'm at least optimistic that it'll only get easier from now on!
